Im Sommer 2023 konnte ich zahlreiche ungewöhnliche Aktivitäten, Ereignisse und Erscheinungen an einem abgelegenen Ort Polens beobachten: In dem kleinen Dorf Jankowo Pomorskie befindet sich einer der wichtigsten Orte für die Entwicklung des Modernismus - hier erhielt der spätere Bauhaus Gründer Walter Gropius seine erste Möglichkeit einen Gebäudeentwurf zu realisieren. Der "Spichlerz Gropius"/ die "Gropius Granary" hat gerade so die Zeit überdauert und ist heute Referenzpunkt für aktuelle utopische Handlungen.
An diesem Ort verunklären sich Ursachen und Wirkung, Wirklichkeit und Referenz, Symbol und Tatsache. Das Gebäude ist Projektionsfläche für die Ideen einer Künstlergruppe mit großem Namen: Warsaw Bauhaus sind die Triebfeder aller dortigen Aktivitäten und die Eigentümer*innen des Gebäudes. Sie haben es vor kurzem aus Versehen in einer Zwangsversteigerung gekauft und arbeiten mit enormem Aufwand und Leidenschaft daran, ihrer Behauptung zu entsprechen. Bauhaus, das bedeutet heute irgendwas mit Innovation und Transdisziplinarität und Zukunft und ist ein beinahe hohles Zeichen geworden, das vergessen lässt, wie antikonventionell, radikal und prekär viele Aspekte des historischen Bauhaus waren. Was war also zuerst da: Mythos oder Fortschritt? Das eine im anderen inbegriffen - vermutlich war die direkte Erfahrung dessen der Kern dieser Forschungsreise.

In the summer of 2023, I was able to observe numerous unusual activities, events and apparitions in a remote place in Poland: The small village of Jankowo Pomorskie is home to one of the most important places for the development of modernism - this is where the later Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius was given his first opportunity to realize a building design. The “Spichlerz Gropius”/the “Gropius Granary” has barely survived the test of time and is now a reference point for current utopian activities.
